Safety and Prevention in the Workplace (cont.)

- Assume all human blood and bodily fluids are infectious so to observe universal
precautions means you act as if the blood or fluid is contaminated.
Universal Precautions
Selecting PPE
Personal Protective Equipment ("PPE")
- Always place a barrier between you and a person’s blood or body fluid.
- Gloves (if you don't have
any, improvise..use a towel or plastic bag)

- Eye Protection (note: regular
eyeglasses and contact lenses are not considered protection)

- Clothing (gown, hairnet, shoe
covers)
|
- Rescue Barrier (CPR mask)

Contaminated PPE
Proper Glove Removal Steps:
1. Without touching the bare skin, grasp either palm with the fingers
of the opposite hand.
2. Gently pull the glove away from the palm and toward the fingers,
remove the glove inside out. Hold on to the glove removed with the
fingers of the opposite hand.
3. Without touching the outside of the contaminated glove, carefully
slide the ungloved index finger inside the wrist band of the gloved
hand.
4. Gently pulling outwards and down toward the fingers, removing the
glove inside out.
5. Throw away both gloves in an appropriate container.
6. Use an alcohol-based hand rub to clean your hands and other exposed skin.
- Remove and place into a container marked with a biohazard symbol or red bag.
Bodily fluid & waste need to be disposed of according to individual state
regulations.
