Exposure Incidents and Follow Up
1. Wash needle-sticks and cuts with soap and water
Exposure Incident First Aid
4. Report the incident to your supervisor
5. Immediately seek medical treatment
2. Flush splashes to the nose, mouth, or skin with water
3. Irrigate eyes with clean water, saline, or sterile irrigates
Post-exposure evaluation and follow-up
Employer must make a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up immediately
available to the employee and it must include:
2. Identification and documentation of the source individual
3. Arrangements to have the source individual tested
1. Routes of exposure and how it occurred
5. Testing the employee’s blood with consent ASAP
4. The source individual’s test results and information about laws protecting
confidentiality
Evaluating the circumstances surrounding an exposure incident
The following must be considered:
3. A description of the device being used
4. Protective equipment or clothing in use at the time of incident
1. Engineering controls in use at time of incident
2. Work practices followed
7. Employee’s training
8. All injuries from contaminated sharps must be recorded in an injury log
5. Location of incident
6. Procedure being performed at the time of the incident
