Course Review
Bloodborne Pathogens
BBP = bacteria & viruses present in the blood & bodily
fluids of an infected person that can cause disease to others
HBV - Hepatitus B virus
HCV - Hepatitus C virus
HIV - human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS
*assume all fluids from all people are infected
OPIM's
OPIM = other potentially infectious materials
(ex. seminal, vaginal, amniotic)
Safety & Prevention
-Employer's Exposure Control Plan - every
workplace with employees at risk must have one

-Engineering Controls = equipment or devices that
help reduce exposure by isolating or removing it
(ex. needle/sharps biohazard disposal box or
needless systems)

-Work place practice controls = procedures that
reduce likelihood of exposure
(ex. handwashing 15 seconds minimum, PPE's =
personal protective equipment like masks/gloves to
observe Universal Precautions, & decontamination)
-Universal Precautions = to protect yourself
 from blood & OPIM
-Contaminated PPE should be discarded in a
 red biohazard bag
-Grossly contaminated surfaces/equipment
clean 1st with diluted household bleach
Exposure Incidents
& Follow Up
-1st step following an exposure incident is first aid
-Immediate first aid, confidential medical
evaluation & follow-up are 3 critical components
