Moving a Victim -
Do not move unless you have to
Consider victim's weight & if needed
get help
Lift without twisting
Support head & neck
Drag by back of underneath shirt or armpits
with neck supported by your forearms,
moving them in the direction of the long
axis of the body to protect the spine
Emergency Action Steps -
Recovery Positions – Do not move unless you have to but these are
used if you must leave a victim alone to get help
Circulation – look for movement, and blood pumping out of a wound….if
found control bleeding with direct pressure, look for normal color (use your
wrist to feel head for temperature), and continue ABC's...30 compressions
Breathing – look, listen, and feel for breath
on your face and visible chest rise 5-10 sec.
Airway - perform on a hard/flat surface, then
open airway by head tilt chin lift maneuver.
No breath – begin CPR with 30:2 x
5cycles or 2 min. & reassess
Breath – check rest of injuries
To prevent the victim from aspirating on his vomit if you have to leave them
To maintain normal body temperature (may need to roll to get blanket
beneath them)
For responsive victim’s who’s wound’s are being managed and are just
waiting on EMS
Uninjured victim –
Make sure victim's body position is stable so they don't roll over onto
their stomach/face

This is a modified recovery
position much like you do for an
uninjured victim, only using less
neck movement to minimize a
spinal injury
Injured victim (HAINES)=high arm in endangered spine position
Recovery positions help:
Responsive
Assist victim in maintaining normal body temperature
Alert 911 if no response
Attend to the ABC's if needed
Unresponsive
ABC's of CPR
Attend to the ABC's if needed
