Heat and Cold-Related Illness/Injury

Heat Exhaustion -
Heat Stroke - Could be unconscious, dry/clammy
 | | Call 911
|
 | | Water all over body
|
 | | Ice pack all arteries (neck, groin, armpits, wrists)
|
 | | Place in recovery position to protect airway |
| | |
Still conscious, heavy sweating
 | | Get into cool place
|
 | | Loosen/remove clothing
|
 | | Give Gatoraide-type sports drink or water
|
 | | Apply wet cloths, fan, & cold compresses near arteries |
| | |
Frostbite – cold, hard, numb, pins/needles sensation, throbbing
 | | Place sterile dressing between toes/fingers
|
 | | Wrap area with sterile dressing
|
 | | Remove constrictive jewelry, clothing
|
 | | DO NOT rewarm a frozen body part if |
| | refreezing may occur
|
Hypothermia – shivering, weakness, altered mental status, could be unconscious
 | | Place near heat source and place warm |
| | water in contact with skin (NOT hot, NOT fully emerged)
|
 | | DO NOT rub/massage area or give alcohol |
